Local Mosque Celebrates its 11th Annual Recognition Luncheon and Fashion Show
“Empowering Women Through Economics”



(Philadelphia, PA) - The catwalk will be set ablaze when 20 or so local
models give Naomi, Eva, Tyra, and Toccara a run for their money on
Saturday, May 9th at the Hilton Hotel, City Line Avenue. The models
participating in this fashion show have spent countless hours
perfecting their glamorous Paris/NY Fashion week walks. But there will
be no bathing suites or midriff baring baby tees for these models. What
makes this fashion show different from the dozens held on Mother’s Day
weekend in the Delaware Valley is that it is focused on modest attire
for Muslim and other modestly clothed women. This years luncheon emcee
will be Zenobia Shah who is a pioneer of women’s empowerment and
achievement by means of spiritual growth, and intellectual
accomplishments in exemplary growth and leadership development. The
commentator for the fashion show will be Faatimah Gamble (wife and
business partner of Salaam Enterprises with her husband Kenny Gamble
the internationally known song writer and producer). The event begins
at 11:00 am and ends promptly at 4pm. The show, in its 11th year,
features designers from across the globe, showcasing modest but
fashionable attire for those whose faith govern their dress and
appearance in public settings, and in the eyesight of the opposite sex.


This year’s theme, “Empowering Women Through Economics,” is our humble
attempt to enlighten our guests by providing them with the right tools,
primarily information, that will help them better their money
management skills. Our Special Guest Speaker will be Dominique Smith,
Nationally Known Economic and Business Developer Dominique is Partner
and Founder of Trizen, LLC which is a leadership and entrepreneurs
training and consulting company, specializing in training business
leaders and entrepreneurship to be successful ‘leaders of tomorrow’.
The fashion show is the highly anticipated finale for a program
designed to recognize women in the community that have dedicated time,
expertise, money or other commitments to the upliftment of the Islamic
community. We appreciate the past support of NBC-10 news anchor Monique
Braxton who was our emcee last year.

Islamic doctrine instructs Muslim women to cover their bodies in loose
fitting, opaque clothing as to not show their feminine shape and
attract attention from men other than their husbands and men in their
family. Needless to say sequined mini skirts, tight fitting, low rise
jeans and tops with plunging necklines exposing everything from the
neck to the navel, are excluded from this exhibition of devout women
showcasing what is more likely to be featured in Muslim Girl Magazine,
a magazine for Muslim young ladies, rather than Harper’s Baazar, Vogue
or Elle. The fashion industry is now recognizing modesty as a staple
not a trend,” says Gwendolyn Dawan, designer and co-chair of the United
Muslim Masjid’s Fashion Show Committee, which coordinates the show each
year. “Combine all those things together, and you’ve got style.”

More than 350 attendees can anticipate colorful, flowing fabrics
including silk and linen for the summer season. Hats, embellished
khimars (the headscarf most Muslim women adorn in public) evening gowns
and garments from exotic lands such as the middle east, Africa and
India will offer a sense of diversity in practice and attire in the
Muslim community. Segments featuring Islamic wedding dresses and fur
coats are favorites among loyal attendees traveling from as far as
Atlanta, New York City, Richmond and Hampton, Virginia and Washington
D.C. This years special invited guests are Tuesday Gordon-Joan Shepp,
