Sullivan Street Shakedown: Late Night Local
NYC, Saturday 6/19/2010

DJ Nutritious and Zoe Wilder's SpinSpinNYC is at it again with their next installment of the Sullivan Street Shakedown. Only 3 official Sullivan Street Shakedown monthlies out and they've already featured some amazing talent: Shakedown originators and Worship Recordings dub-house pioneers Rob Paine and Willyum, Jackin' House don JT Donaldson, and Boston's own live electronic all-stars Psylab. This month, they're digging out some the best subterranean NYC talent and tunneling them to their West Village soiree for the Sullivan Street Shakedown's Late Night Local. It's amazing how much diverse nightlife occurs below ground in this city and this month's Sullivan Street Shakedown will surface some of NYC's tried and true "conductors."

DJ Monchan (Toshi Moriguchi) is known mildly for his secret Nininja parties in Brooklyn and wildly for his creative managing and talent programming of Dailysession.com, an internet radio station, blog, and podcasting depot "bridging the gap between artist and audience in New York City with daily radio from the city’s underground...with weekly transmissions from A-1 Records, Breakbeat Science, Halcyon, LionDub, Vinyl Mania, Zakka, and more." With 20 years behind the decks combined with some serious radio programming skills, Monchan's a high-caliber DJ with a penchant for Funk-Soul music - a truly choosy chooser of electronic rhythms and rhymes.

DJ Chris Hall is a deejay's DJ. If you know him today, you've probably been blessed by one of his beautiful soulful house mix CDs, or you've signed-on to SoundCloud to receive his constantly updated supply of deep house sets. However, since the early days of our Strongest Island's influential Caffeine rave scene, Chris Hall has been a supporting force helping to grow the old-school energies of East Coast rave culture into a refined vision of his own. His upcoming release, a remix of "From NY With Love", proves just this with Mr. Hall partnering sounds with early Caffeine Records producer and now Stupendous Music chief (Jim) Felli to prove that New York's house scene is not only same as it ever was but, it's getting better every day.

As if that isn't enough, Wilder and Nutritious have signed on drummer extraordinaire, Stephen Chopek as the night's resident percussionist. Chopek's not only a masterful visual artist coloring Jersey City's flowering gallery scene with his "collages on paper and paintings on glass," he's also a tasteful theorist whose philosophy boasts finding "individual elements most interesting when taken out of their original context and re-interpreted through a fresh perspective." His latest work SodaCan, a collage of both organic and electronic musical and visual expressions, began from studying drum set and classical percussion at a young age and eventually performing with William Patterson University's percussion ensemble. Later, Chopek furthered his studies with drummer Billy Martin of Medeski Martin and Wood and famed jazz percussionist Leon Parker. As a drummer, Stephen has toured the world and recorded with Charlie Hunter, John
Mayer, Marc Broussard, Jesse Malin, The Alternate Routes, Mikey Beatz, and many others. Similar to the closing signature on a finished work,
Chopek's percussion will paint the sheen on this month's Sullivan Street Shakedown.

A Sullivan Street Shakedown wouldn't be complete without an energetic set from DJ Nutritious and some serious dance floorwork by Ms. Zoe Wilder. Add the notorious Brooklyn beatbox MC, ElaNEF, to the shuffle and you've got yourself a triple threat of cantankerous ceremony hype-masters. These three rocked the Resource Magazine (also, an official sponsor of this Late Night Local) Three Stage National Tour kick-off at the Meatpacking District's Milk Studios back in March and sent thousands into a dance floor frenzy. Things got so almighty that NY's finest and Milk security were forced to shut the party down before
midnight. Thankfully, Sullivan Hall and SpinSpinNYC's Sullivan Street Shakedown call to a higher power: the amazing love and respect of the staff, their patrons, and the welcoming warmth of the West Village locale.

Additionally, Avant Garde VJ, Mamiko Kushida, is on scene as well as Sullivan Hall's surprisingly fine sound and lighting.

The monthly Sullivan Street Shakedown happens at Sullivan Hall, 214 Sullivan Street and is always 18+, 21 to drink. June 19th's Late Night
Local edition begins promptly after midnight and runs until 4am (even later, if there's demand). Special $5 RSVP to: local@spinspinnyc.com
